Member Spotlight: Jessica Barker
16 July 2026
Jess Barker is Associate Director and a Licensed IP at Xeinadin Corporate Recovery. She is the currently chair of the R3 New Professional Steering Group which brings together and represents restructuring, turnaround and insolvency professionals in the early stages of their career across all areas of R3.
What gets you up in the morning?
I'm very grateful to have a job I genuinely enjoy, as well as a family I look forward to going home to each day. I'm motivated by being the best version of myself and I desire to keep growing, both personally and professionally. Being a positive role model for my daughter is a huge driver for me.
What's been your biggest career achievement to date and why?
Successfully passing the JIEB corporate insolvency exam, obtaining my corporate insolvency appointment- taking licence and securing my first appointment-taking role with Xeinadin Corporate Recovery. These represent years of hard work, and I'm extremely grateful to the insolvency practitioners (IPs) and colleagues who have supported me along the way.
Which professional challenges are keeping you awake and why?
The misconception of what IPs actually do. We are often portrayed as the 'Grim Reaper' of business when, in reality, the majority of our work is focused on rescue, recovery and preserving value wherever possible. I think the inaccurate narrative can undermine the positive contribution made by the profession.
What is the most important career lesson you've learned?
Finding the balance between being ambitious and being kind to yourself. I've also learned that skills such as communication, teamwork and the ability to be empathetic and personable are just as important as technical expertise.
How do you keep developing your knowledge and skills?
I place significant value on learning from experienced IPs, whether through mentoring, peer discussions or working closely with them on appointments as experience-led development. Also, I keep up to date with technical and regulatory changes, including case law and best practice guidance. I regularly attend industry events, forums and training sessions.
How do you maintain a good work-life balance?
By staying organised and managing my time carefully, often starting my day at 5am. Insolvency and motherhood can both be demanding, so having structure helps me to stay on top of everything. Having a supportive and positive workplace culture, along with the flexibility to work from home, makes a big difference. I'm also realistic about what needs prioritising.
Why are you passionate about being involved with the insolvency profession?
The profession offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference at times when businesses need clarity and honest guidance. I get job satisfaction from navigating complex and often stressful situations, helping directors understand their options, and achieving the best possible outcome in difficult circumstances.
What do you value about being an R3 member?
I value being an R3 member for the professional community and ongoing development provided. R3 plays a key role in bringing the profession together, promoting best practice and supporting professionals at every stage of their career. I have particularly benefitted from the opportunities R3 offers to connect with others and broaden my professional network. Technical updates are also invaluable. I am chair of the North West New Professionals Committee as well as chair of the New Professionals Steering Group. These roles enable me to actively represent new professional and to support development and networking opportunities.
The R3 New Professionals Forum takes place on 10 September 2026.
