Tim Cooper’s Presidential Agenda

Tim Cooper’s Presidential Agenda

01 May 2024

It is a real privilege to write this at the start of my year as President of R3. The Association has been a home for me for the vast majority of my career – a career which has exclusively focused on insolvency and restructuring – and I am well aware of the value R3 has delivered for me and countless others in my time as a member.

Building on the work of Nicky Fisher and my predecessors, I want to ensure that when I hand the Presidency over to my successor, Tom Russell, everyone working in every part of the insolvency and restructuring profession, regardless of their age or stage in their career, recognise R3 as the membership association for them.

To do this, I’ve set out five specific aims for my term as President:

  1. Highlight the profession's socio-economic contributions to the public and parliamentarians through high-quality thought leadership work, demonstrating the value delivered through saving jobs, rescuing businesses and creating opportunities for growth, and ensuring that the contribution made by the profession is better understood.
  2. Advocate for the profession as an inclusive and rewarding career choice, providing clear pathways for qualification and progression. Showcasing clear pathways for entering the profession, becoming qualified and progressing in one of the broad range of careers available whether in the insolvency, restructuring or legal sector.
  3. Strive to improve the regulatory framework and reduce the regulatory burden experienced by practitioners and firms of all sizes, through building a positive regard for the work of the profession with regulators and government agencies.
  4. Uphold the UK's position as a global centre of excellence for restructuring and insolvency through our links with INSOL International and wider stakeholder engagement work, to enhance the UK’s position as the leading international centre of excellence for insolvency and restructuring.
  5. Lead discussions on the route to qualification for insolvency practitioners, ensuring it remains relevant and meets the profession's current and future needs.

These aims are ambitious – especially given the current political-economic uncertainty. But I firmly believe I can use my Presidential year to move the agenda forward for the Association, our members, and the wider profession, with the support of you, our membership, and the team at R3.

I look forward to working with you, meeting as many of you as I can, and drawing on your experience, enthusiasm and ideas during my time as President, so that the value of R3 is better recognised and the contribution the profession makes to the UK, its economy and its citizens is more widely understood and appreciated.
