What's your current role and what do you do in it?
I'm an insolvency administrator at PKF Littlejohn Advisory in Leeds. I administer a portfolio of insolvency cases, from cradle to grave, across a variety of sectors; with a focus on SMEs. I also train junior colleagues as much as possible.
How did you get to where you are today?
I went to University near where I grew up in Cambridge, and moved to Leeds having never visited the city before. I applied for a job as a receptionist at a national insolvency practice, and was told that I was better suited to case work so started my career three weeks later.
What made you decide to pursue a career in insolvency and restructuring?
Like everyone I've ever met in the industry, I fell into it!
Why did you become a D&I Champion?
Because I wanted to raise the profile of the sector and that good work that is done every day. I wanted to bring the sector to the attention of young people (in sixth form, further education, or higher education) to help inspire the next generation of insolvency professionals.
Which aspect of the role is most important to you and why?
Being able to say that the work we are doing makes a difference to someone in the sector. By sharing good practice, we can help to guide smaller firms through what has worked for us as well as lessons learned.
What are the best examples of EDI initiatives you have seen in the profession?
I have seen a welcome rise in non-alcohol based networking events that don't revolve around the golf course. I have nothing against drinking or golf, but it has been refreshing to see a more inclusive events that better serve our industry and contacts.
What EDI initiatives have you benefitted from in your firm?
I particularly enjoy the breadth of inclusion activities we have at PKF. We have colleagues from all over the world, and being able to celebrate different cultures and cuisines has been very enjoyable and has helped to foster a sense of inclusion (although I have had to put new holes in my belt!)
What's the one thing you would like to see the profession do differently when it comes to EDI?
Transparency around progression and pay as you embark on your career - especially for new starters who are looking to build a career in insolvency but don't know if they can stay in it longer term.
