Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is about creating a working environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and empowered to achieve their full potential. But it is about more than quality of culture – EDI ensures that firms and industries benefit from diversity of thought, background and experience, and use those insights to evolve and meet the challenges they face today, tomorrow and beyond.

This is crucial in a profession like restructuring, turnaround and insolvency, which supports every area of the economy, and individuals from every section of society in the UK.

At R3, we see EDI as central to our work as the trade association for the profession and to how we operate as an employer. We are committed to driving progress, building a more inclusive internal culture, and working collaboratively with others to help shape a profession where opportunity is open to all.

 

As the trade association for the UK’s restructuring, turnaround and insolvency profession, R3 recognises the importance of leading the conversation on EDI.

We understand that a fair profession is one that reflects the full diversity of the businesses and individuals it supports, and where everyone has the opportunity to join and progress, regardless of their background.

That is why championing inclusive practice and driving meaningful progress on EDI is a key strategic priority for us. Through our events, communications, guidance and collaborations, we support firms across the profession to take action on EDI and share what works.

We understand the benefits a fully diverse and inclusive workplace delivers for our staff and our members – both in terms of fully representing the profession we support and ensuring diversity of thought and experience to make the organisation as inclusive and innovative as possible. We are committed to creating an internal culture that reflects the values we promote externally and supports all our staff to thrive.

Progress on EDI requires shared commitment and collective action, and collaboration is at the heart of R3’s approach.

In 2021, we partnered with the Insolvency Service to launch the Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group. This Group brings together organisations from across insolvency, restructuring, law, accountancy and professional services who are committed to improving EDI within the profession. The Group shares insight, identifies barriers, and works together to develop solutions.

Alongside this, R3 has established a network of Diversity & Inclusion Champions, professionals from across the profession who are helping to support and share good practice.

By working together, we believe the profession can become more inclusive, more representative, and better equipped to serve the individuals and businesses it serves.

EY

On Monday 24th June 2024, R3 held the inaugural Equity, Diversity and Inclusion roundtable at EY's office in London, bringing together the R3-Insolvency Service Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group Champions for the first time. After hearing a presentation on how the EY Foundation is working to provide young people from low-income backgrounds valuable work experience and opportunities, the group went onto discuss challenges around recruiting, retaining, and advancing new and diverse talent in the insolvency and restructuring profession.

FieldFisher

On Friday 22nd November 2024, R3 held the Autumn 2024 Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Champions roundtable event, hosted by Fieldfisher. A presentation from Fieldfisher's Head of Inclusion Justina Omotayo kicked off the event, covering some of the great work the firm has been doing in the diversity and inclusion space. This was followed by a group discussion where we heard insights on topics including helping employees feel psychological safety in the workplace, and finding ways to help both big and small firms make EDI a priority in their business strategy.

Wedlake Bell

Our Spring 2025 Equity, Diversity and Inclusion roundtable was held on Monday 31st March 2025 at Wedlake Bell's London office. Inclusive recruitment was a major theme of the event, with Natalie King giving a thorough presentation on the fantastic initiatives Wedlake Bell has implemented to build a more diverse workplace, from Apprenticeship programmes to Internship Schemes. Discussions also touched on a number of topics, including recruitment practices and the role of senior leaders in shaping inclusive workplace cultures.
