Faith series: Understanding Easter with Precious Bakare

What does Easter mean to me as a Christian?

Easter might be known to some as the season for chocolate eggs, the Easter bunny and family Easter egg hunts, but what is the true meaning of Easter to a Christian?

Easter marks the day that Christ was raised back to life after being crucified three days earlier, it’s a celebration of Jesus’s resurrection with a new life. As magnificent the miracle of resurrecting is, Christians believe this resurrection was for all people, not just Christians.

God is greater than our feelings, and Easter brings me the reassurance of His grace and the new life He offers us without limitation. Easter therefore is a time of reflection for me and thankfulness for what Christ did for us. Some denominations have a time of Lent which can include a time of fasting, for instance, abstaining from food for a certain period of time or giving up something you really like to focus on God and remembering the love that Jesus had for all of us.

Finding confidence and improving wellbeing through reflection

Even in a high-pressure work environment, I make a conscious effort to start my day grounded in faith. Before coming into the office, I take time to pray, read my daily devotional, Rhapsody of Realities, and complete the Bible Refresh on the Bible app. This routine helps centre my mindset on what God has already done for me, rather than on my current circumstances.

On busy or demanding days, that perspective makes a real difference, it reminds me that I can do all things. For me, it’s less about trying to “balance” everything perfectly and more about focusing on the right things. If I choose excellence in my work, I believe everything else follows.

Creating space for Easter in the workplace in an inclusive and respectful way

One simple and inclusive way workplaces can create space for religious observance, such as Easter, is by encouraging learning through shared experiences. For example, a short quiz about the Easter story as told in the Bible could be a great way to provide insight and spark conversation. Quizzes are something we already enjoy in my office, and they offer a light-hearted way for colleagues of all backgrounds to learn something new without feeling excluded.

Small initiatives like this can help build understanding while respecting everyone’s beliefs and experiences.

Easter takeaways

For me, the Easter story, the resurrection and ascension of Jesus represents love, redemption and the freedom to be who you are and to shine in everything you do. I would want anyone unfamiliar with Easter to recognise the depth of love shown through that story.

Ultimately, I hope learning about Easter encourages people to show the same love to those around them and to feel a sense of gratitude for their families, their careers, and even their faith, whatever form that takes.

How I mark Easter and what it leaves me reflecting on

I will be attending church over Easter, spending time with my family, and worshipping with gratitude for all that God has done and continues to do in my life. Giving to a charitable organisation is also an important part of how I mark the season, as generosity is a core way of demonstrating love and reflects the sacrifice at the heart of Easter. This year, Easter also coincides with my communion service, which makes the season especially meaningful for me.

As I return to everyday work and life, Easter reminds me to extend grace to others in the same way God has shown grace to me. Thank you to R3 for the opportunity to share about Easter and what it truly means. I hope you enjoy all the chocolate eggs that come your way this season, and if you do decide to spend this Sunday in church with your family, I hope you enjoy it.

God bless you and Happy Easter!
