Joint Insolvency Examination Board seeks Senior Moderator

10 December 2024

The Joint Insolvency Examination Board (the “Board”), which oversees the examination process for all those seeking to obtain the Licensed Insolvency Practitioner qualification in England, Wales and Scotland, is seeking a Senior Moderator. Applicants should have substantial experience in both the technical and practical aspects of insolvency. Experience in the setting and/or marking of insolvency-related exams would be useful but is not essential.

As head of the Examination Team, the Senior Moderator is responsible for organising the preparation of the Corporate and Personal Examinations for each diet, for moderating the “borderline” scripts in each diet and for reporting to the Board. The time commitment is not onerous over the year but does demand a concentration of effort when the scripts from each diet are being marked.

In recent years the Board has regularly reviewed the examination process and procedures and sought consultations with other insolvency stakeholders generally. Currently, the examinations are sat online, and the marking is carried out electronically, and it is important to the Board that they remain very relevant for the future of the profession. It is envisaged that the new Senior Moderator will play a full part in any development of the examinations.

An annual honorarium is paid to the Senior Moderator.

The successful candidate would work alongside the current Senior Moderator (Steve Treharne) from their appointment until the conclusion of the 2025 exam cycle with the results in March 2026. Thereafter, it is envisaged that they will take the lead role of Senior Moderator for the November 2026 examination and beyond. As part of the role, the Senior Moderator will be expected to attend meetings of the Board and to liaise with the education adviser to the Board as well as with the examiners and moderators.

Applications, outlining suitability for the role together with a detailed C.V. should be sent, in the first instance to the Secretary to the Board, Stella Leslie ([email protected]). The closing date for applications is 5 p.m. on Friday 17 January 2025 with interviews planned to take place during the first half of February. Any person interested in applying is welcome to contact the Chairman of the Board, Stephen Allinson, at [email protected] or the Senior Moderator, Steve Treharne, at [email protected] for a no-obligation discussion via email in the first instance.
