In memoriam: James Martin

We are saddened to report the passing of James Martin, an enthusiastic and highly regarded member of the insolvency profession, who passed away on 13 July 2025 following a short battle with cancer.

From working with parliamentarians on anti-fraud initiatives to advancing our flagship “Value of the Profession” report, July was another busy month for R3's Policy and Public Affairs team.

The Policy and Public Affairs team had a busy June working to continue to ensure the profession’s voice is clearly heard and constructively represented. 

Johnny is a Chartered Accountant with over 23 years of experience specialising in business recovery and asset-based lending. He founded J9 Advisory in 2014, is an R3 Fellow member, and a UK Board Director of the TMA. Johnny is listed in the Credit Strategy Magazine TRI300, which recognises those responsible for the progression of industry standards, and inspiring excellence across the UK turnaround, rescue and insolvency profession.

With recruitment and retention frequently noted as one of the key challenges for R3 member firms, earlier in the year, as part of their preparation for the Southern Forum, the Southern and Thames Valley New Professionals approached R3 with a proposed survey of the New Professional membership. We worked with the committee, and the New Professionals Steering Group, to develop and launch the survey which ran nationally throughout March. This blog overviews some of the findings.

May has been a busy month for R3’s Policy and Public Affairs Team. While representing the profession at several events, the team have been keeping one eye on the Employment Rights Bill and organising key stakeholder roundtables.
