External Affairs update: April 2024

21 May 2024

Warmer weather marked the beginning of Spring last month, and with the new season came a new President in office for R3. This, along with a round table with R3’s Past Presidents’ and continued media interest in the insolvency profession and its work, meant another busy month for the External Affairs team.

New President at the helm of R3

At the end of the month, Tim Cooper, Partner at Addleshaw Goddard LLP, was appointed as the new President of R3. Tim took over the role from Nicky Fisher, Partner at Herron Fisher.

In the run up to his appointment, final touches were made to his manifesto for the year ahead, with some of his aims for his term in office including advocating for the profession as a rewarding career choice, working to improve the regulatory framework, and highlighting to the public and the media the positive work that the profession carries out.

Commenting on his appointment, Tim Cooper said: “I’m determined to ensure that by the time I leave office the work of the profession is widely understood and valued, and the opportunities provided by a career in the profession are well-known and in demand by the people who will lead it in future.”

News of Tim’s presidency was picked up by a number of trade publications, including Insolvency Insider, Yahoo Finance, Solicitors Journal and Scottish Legal News.

Past Presidents’ Round Table

With a new President in office, April was a fitting month for R3’s first Past Presidents’ Round Table, hosted at Addleshaw Goddard’s offices in London. We were delighted to welcome 14 of R3’s past, present and future Presidents for a round table discussion that covered a wide range of topics, from recruitment and retention to regulation.

The session was a chance to learn about the unique opportunities and challenges that faced each President during their time in office, and to discuss what obstacles may face the insolvency and restructuring profession in the years ahead.

It was particularly interesting to hear the group praise R3’s lobbying efforts, and to hear feedback that this work should be further amplified to members. With a General Election on the horizon this year, the Public Affairs team will have many opportunities to get in front of MPs, both in the current and Shadow Government and we will share all the work we carry out in our blog, on socials, and at conferences and regional meetings.

R3 in the media

As well the news that Tim Cooper was appointed as R3 President, media interest in insolvency statistics was also strong in April. Richard Bathgate’s comments on the annual insolvency statistics for Scotland was mentioned in a range of national, trade and Scottish publications including the Times, the Scottish Sun, the Scottish Daily Mail, and Credit Connect.

Our comments on the March insolvency statistics for England and Wales also picked up coverage in a number of online and print articles in national, regional and trade publications, including the Times, TRI Strategy, the Bucks Herald, and Business Up North.

In April, President Tim Cooper also spoke to the Times, discussing the reasons behind a record number of company incorporations in the first three months of this year.
