Stephen is full-time civil and commercial mediator based in London. He has completed over 1200 mediations including more than 360 online. He is ranked in Band 1 in both Chambers and the Legal 500 Directories and is listed in Who’s Who’s Legal and is on the IMI panel. He is dual accredited in the USA and is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators of the RSA (Royal Society of Arts) based on his reputation in the field of conflict resolution. In 2025, Stephen carried out 122 mediations:53 by Zoom, 68 in person and 1 hybrid. 46 were insolvency mediations. His mediation style is pragmatic and proactive. In Chambers 2026 he is described as “popular with both claimants and defendants… extremely experienced, straightforward, no- nonsense, cuts to the chase to help people get to a solution.” Stephen has published 7 books on mediation designed to help all those involved in mediation get the best out of the process. His three most recent ones are Setting Up in Business as a Mediator, Bloomsbury 2nd edition 2020; Mediation Behaviour: Why we act like we do, Bloomsbury 2021; Digital Mediation Bloomsbury 2024. As a supporter of Manchester United, he understands both the emotions that people experience and express at mediations- anger, disappointment, frustration and relief – and the need to have perseverance, patience and hope.
